Cabled Hobo Bag Pattern

I promised to post this pattern so very long ago and have just gotten around to it. I apologize for the long wait. I always like reading stories of how the designer has come up with the pattern so here we go. My mother kept asking me for months to either knit or crochet a bag for her but every time I would start something we would get in some sort of an argument and I would stop. I started knitting this bag in October of 05 and was planning to give it to her for her November birthday but because of the many delay it was only about half way finished. So I just bought her a gift and kept on knitting. We had more fights as the weeks progressed and I continued to stop working on it each time but finally on Christmas eve I finished the entire thing! I was so tired that I didn't even wrap it up, I just hung it on the Christmas tree.

I have just begun knitting after taking a couple years off from it. I just never had the time before, and I have found a lot of free time lately. I was researching something fun and useful to knit. Much to my dismay, I found a lot of bags that were just dreadful. I was pleasantly suprised when I stumbled upon your pattern. I'm knitting it up for myself, and I'm thrilled. It is a gorgeous pattern. You are very talented!! Thank you for posting this pattern!

I seem to be unable to print the instructions for the cabled hobo bag. It prints the picture, then the photo and info about you, and that is all. With the picture I have about 7 lines of instructions. Can you possibly help me? This pattern is beautiful and I want to make it for my daughter.

I absolutely love the pattern! I have moved all my other projects back and this is #1 on my to do list! You are really talented and it's so impressive what you can do. I envy your creativity!

I don't know why it isn't printing correctly for you. Try highlighting the text and then just printing the selected area only. Hope that helps :)

I found your gorgeous cabled bag pattern, from wondering over from craftster. It's absolutely amazing! (As with all of the other work that you do).
Thanks so much for sharing your pattern with us. That is very kind of you. I haven't tried cables yet but with your well written pattern, it doesn't seem difficult at all.
Your bag has inspired me to finally give cables a try. :)
I'm looking forward to making this for my Mom, as a Xmas gift.
But I had a question for you, if you don't mind.
I was wondering what kind of a closure you did, on your bag?
I don't see a flap, or zipper. I only see some beads on either side, at the front.
Did you do some kind of a drawsting, with the beads to tighten it up?
I would really appreciate any advice that you could give to me, on how to do a closure for your bag.
If you did in fact do some kind of a drawsting closure, I would love to know how you did that.
My email address is: queen_gueneviere@yahoo.ca
Thanks a bunch and, keep up the great work.

Hi Lynda, yes it is a drawstring closure. The one for this bag was made using scraps of fabric that were left over after making the liner. I just sewed a regular square liner using a sewing machine and then hand sewed it into the bag. I have also made drawstrings for this bag using a chain of crochet and weaving it through and then adding beads to the ends to make it secure. You could also make an I-cord drawstring if you don't know how to crochet.

Lynda said...

Thanks Amanda, for your help. Yes I can crochet. They're all great ideas. I appreciate your help.
And again, wonderful bag! You're sooooo talented.

What a great pattern. I'm really enjoying knitting it for my daughter, who found your blog. I love cables! Quick question -- did you hand or machine sew the lining to the knitted handle? I've lined knit purses before, but never the handle. I'm sure you'll achieve your dream of publishing a knit or crochet book.

Amanda said...

I hand sewed the fabric to the bag. I have tried to machine sew fabric onto knitting and it got all jammed up so I don't recommend it.

I was in a department store when I saw similar bags with pearls and big buckles selling for hundreds of dollars. I scoffed, knowing I could knit one myself(If only I had the pattern!). So thank you for posting this, it's lovely, and you are talented, and I have no doubt your future book will be a success. You already have one customer!

Is the whole body of the bag knitted in dpn's and the straps are on straight needles?

can u please tell me is the needle size 8mm english or 8 american.this bag is really lovely and i would love to knit it looking at it it looks like what we call aran wool.sorry i feel a bit silly.

I have knitted about 9 inches of the body of the bag and it is only about 7 inches wide. It all squishes together. If I pull it out sideways it measures about 11 inches wide. How do I make the fabric not shrink inwards? How do I keep it wide?

carly said...

I just started knitting 2 weeks ago. I made one scarf before I saw your bag and decided I had to make it. I used a book to learn how to do cables, and I just finished the body tonight. I was wondering, can I put in a zipper instead of the drawstring closure? You're awesome! I can't believe you're my age and you designed it! It's been fun and I can't wait to have it finished! Thanks :-)

I really like the bag, I'd probabl buy it in the store! I als appreciate the realness of your post about the delay due to arguements with mom. It's nice to hear a personal experience story where everything is not perfect. I actually use knitting, crochet, sewing, nededlepoint to escape for a bit in my daily life. Especially throughout the miseries of my oregnancy. Thank-you~
